Classic Hummus Recipe

best hummus recipe

I feel like there are two kinds of people in the world.  Those that are hummus obsessed and those who couldn’t care less.  Which category do you fall into?

I’m definitely more on the side of hummus crazy!  But not ALL hummus.  It might sound a little stuck up of me but my hummus recipe is my favorite kind to eat!

Classic hummus is one of those things that goes with everything.  It’s for dipping veggies, smearing on toast, or putting in a salad.  I love putting it on bread with egg or avocado on top and then adding a bit of Everything But the Bagel seasoning!  Yum!

This recipe only has 4 ingredients: chickpeas, oil, garlic, and salt.  I always add a splash or so of water to mine to give it that extra creaminess.

This ends up being a big batch so you could always cup the recipe in half if you don’t want as much but I always end up eating it all!

All you need for this recipe is a food processor (or a strong blender) and a spatula.  If you love hummus like I do, you’ll love this recipe! Enjoy!

Equipment

  • food processor

Ingredients

  • 2 cans garbanzo beans (chickpeas) - 15 oz each
  • 1/4-1/2 cup olive oil or vegetable oil
  • 1-2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • salt to taste start with 1/2 tsp
  • 1 tbsp water

Instructions

  • Drain and rinse 2 15 oz cans of garbanzo beans and add to food processor.
  • Add oil (I think more is better!), garlic, and salt. Add a little bit of water (helps with the smoothness).
  • Mix all in the food processor for about a minute. If it's not blending completely stop and scrape down the sides with a spatula and add more water or oil - a tiny bit at a time.
  • Keep mixing it with the spatula and blending it with the food processor and adding salt to taste and oil and water for consistency.

Notes

  • At first your hummus might look like it will always be lumpy but give it time and take the time to add things slowly and mix and blend very well and it will get there!  Don't over salt but add lots of oil.
  • The water is there to add a creamy texture.  It's optional but I think it makes it just right
  • This is a base recipe so add in whatever spices and seasonings you think would go well.  I love this recipe just like this!
  • I add my hummus to salads and eat it with tortilla chips or green peppers.

Have fun with this one and make it your own!  Hummus is a great crowd pleaser and now you can say you made it yourself!
