Just a simple little sewing DIY for you today! I made these cafe curtains for my front door a couple years ago and thought I would share the process. It only requires minimal sewing skills and a couple of items.
Here are the curtains that were up when we moved in:
They had a lace detail at the bottom and were bunched directly onto the small curtain rod. Not too shabby, just not my style.

To start off my project, I just gathered a few things:
- a yard of white muslin
- 1/2 inch black clip on curtain rings
- white thread
- sewing machine
I found these rings on Amazon. Â
I started off with measuring the window to see how long and wide I’d like the curtains to be. I knew they would be a little smaller than the previous curtains because they would hang a little below the curtain rod because of the clips.
I cut the fabric to the size I wanted (2 equal rectangles) and folded in each side twice about a half an inch. I ironed them flat to make perfectly straight edges for sewing.
I sewed right along the inner seam.
To make the corners lay flat, I made an “X” shape by going to the sides of the corner (if that makes sense!)
You can see what I mean more here:
Since the curtains were already ironed, they were ready to clip and hang!
I love how muslin has an almost “tweed” pattern up close. It makes it have a farmhouse/rustic vibe.
You can see in this next picture how I attached the clip rings. I just pinched every few inches evenly on the top and clipped it on from behind. This way you can see just the ring from the front and not the clip.
The final result! I love how they turned out. It made this front window just a little more modern and simple. I love doing small projects like these to make my house more of my home.
I hope you enjoyed this tiny DIY! What small projects have you done in your house that still gives you a small smile as you walk passed them? It’s neat how a some inspiration and a sewing machine can make a front door just a little happier.
Nice! I’ve never heard of those curtain clips before this. I’m old school like the curtains that were originally on your door. I’ll keep those in the back of my mind for future curtain projects. 🙂
Yeah! They are really handy!
